Nostril

Nostrils are the paired openings located at the base of the nose that allow air to enter and exit the nasal cavity. The nostril rims, made of skin and cartilage, are all around them.

The primary function of the nostrils is to allow air to enter and exit the nasal cavity during breathing. The nostrils are lined with small hairs called cilia, which help to filter out dust, pollen, and other particles from the air. The nostrils also play a role in regulating the temperature and humidity of the air we breathe, as the air is warmed and moistened as it passes through the nasal cavity.

In addition to their role in breathing, the nostrils also play a role in the sense of smell. Odours enter the nasal cavity through the nostrils, where specialised receptors in the olfactory epithelium are responsible for detecting them.
