Excessive daytime sleepiness

Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is a condition characterised by an ongoing feeling of sleepiness during the day, even after getting an adequate amount of sleep at night. EDS can affect daily activities, such as work or school, and can also increase the risk of accidents.

EDS can be caused by a variety of factors, including sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, narcolepsy, or restless leg syndrome. Lifestyle factors, such as insufficient sleep or an irregular sleep schedule, can also contribute to EDS.

Treating EDS often involves addressing the underlying cause, such as treating sleep disorders or improving sleep habits. This may involve lifestyle changes, such as maintaining a regular sleep schedule, reducing caffeine and alcohol intake, and avoiding screens before bedtime. In some cases, medications may be prescribed to treat underlying sleep disorders or promote wakefulness during the day.

In addition to medical treatment, there are also several self-help strategies that can help manage EDS. These may include taking short naps during the day, engaging in regular physical activity, and practising stress reduction techniques such as meditation or deep breathing.
